THE CHALLENGE
India is facing one of its major and most serious water crisis. According to the WHO, 84% of Indians who don’t have access to improved water and sanitation live in rural communities. As per the latest Millennium Development Goals review by the UN; out of the 35 Indian states, only 7 have achieved full coverage of having a protected water source for their villages. Ground water in most cities and over 19,000 villages contains fluorides, nitrates, pesticides etc. beyond the permissible limits. Quality of drinking water thus continues to be a concern and this is reflected by the fact that about 21% of communicable diseases are water borne and 75% of water related deaths are that of children below five years.
ABOUT BOOND INITIATIVE
Boond is an initiative by SSRDP which aims at providing rural India access to clean and potable drinking water.
With SSRDP’s presence in over 50,000 villages across India, Boond provides various options for clean drinking water by setting up water purification pyramids, aqua packs and water distillation units.
These units are operated and managed by local ‘Yuvacharyas’ in every village who are also trained by SSRDP under the initiative.

OUR PROJECTS
BIO SAND COMMUNITY FILTRATION
This system is a water treatment system which can provide 2,000-3,000 liters of safe water per day. It requires neither chemicals nor electricity to run. Therefore, it can be installed in any site in rural, semi-urban, or remote areas. Since it can be maintained by members of the community, it can also create livelihood options. The filter can be easily assembled with locally available material like sand, pebbles, and water tank.
AQUA PACKS-SOLAR WATER PASTEURIZATION
An effective pathogen eradication technology providing an efficient and economical solution to those without drinkable water using only solar thermal energy. They reduce biological and viral pathogens by 99.99% in natural fresh-water resources. Aqua packs do not require maintenance or trained professionals. These packages are distributed not only to remote villages but also as emergency water purifiers for post-disaster relief work.
TERAFIL WATER FILTER DISTRIBUTION
TERAFIL water filter is a low-cost device to filter impure water into clean drinking water. It is developed to cater needs for clean drinking water, especially when the water is rich in sediments, suspended particles, iron, and microbes causing water-borne diseases. We serve in the rural areas where water from both surface and groundwater sources like dug wells, ponds, tube wells, and rivers is used for drinking.
RAIN WATER HARVESTING
Water shortage is the most dangerous outcome of environment degradation. SSRDP in association with Art of Living sister organization has responded to this crises by training thousands of villagers to take up water-harvesting projects in their communities. Several villages in India where SSRDP works have indigenous mechanisms for rain water harvesting, thus creating a grassroots model for environment sustainability.
