SHUDDHI – EMPOWERMENT THROUGH WASTE MANAGEMENT
One of the biggest sources of ever accumulating pollution is untreated waste. In rural areas, where adequate infrastructure for efficient disposal of waste is absent, untreated waste poses as a serious health hazard for communities. Over the recent years numerous methods have been developed by which the waste is not only treated but is also converted to an alternative source of energy.
SSRDP with its expansive outreach in rural India is bringing these methods into a workable, simple and sustainable reality. Under SSRDP we do health and hygiene camps (5H Program), medical camps, stress relief workshops, construction of houses, toilets, bore-wells, and water bodies rejuvenation.

OUR EXECUTION MODEL
BUILDING A TEAM
We build youth leaders through the Karma Yog which is a form of a Youth Leadership Training Program who work along with rural managers to drive the project. They work at various stages of the project, including conducting surveys, motivating families to get toilets constructed, and ensuring villages stay open defecation-free.
ASSESSMENT SURVEY
The youth leaders conduct surveys to understand villagers’ socio-economic status. It helps to understand the kind of hygiene and sanitation programs needed in the area. The surveying activity also helps us to shortlist the beneficiaries for whom toilets would be constructed.
AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS
Our next step is to educate the rural community on topics related to hygiene and sanitation and share the importance of using toilets. We do this through street plays, pada yatra (street marches), and yoga and meditation programs. We also engage with community members through cleanliness drives. The youth leaders work closely with various stakeholders in a village, like the Panchayat, local youth, and the elderly in order to ensure that all participate in making their village open defecation-free.
OUR PROJECTS
BIOGAS PLANTS INSTALLATIONS
One of solutions to untreated waste is Biogas plant installation. Bio gas plants with a composite unit and domestic sewage treatment plants are some of the different techniques which have been implemented in rural areas. SSRDP has implemented projects in villages where street lights have been powered using a bio gas plant linked to public toilets. Malaria cases have been reduced due to installation of sewage treatment plants.
TOILET CONSTRUCTION - HUMAN WASTE DISPOSAL
The project was started in1985 near Bengaluru to empower illiterate and abused women. Today, over 2000 women from 30 villages have been trained in sewing, embroidery and have also been taught basics of literacy, health and hygiene. Many are today employed in the local garment industry and others work from their homes to augment their family’s income.
TEMPLE WASTE MANAGEMENT(WEST BENGAL)
Our women’s multi-purpose cooperative society has over 300 members with wonderful business ideas, originally hailing from underprivileged backgrounds working as housemaids or cooks. Under this project, various loans are dispersed to the members to facilitate self-employment at a low rate of interest.
ENZYME PREPARATION AND TRAINING PROJECT
SSRDP provides training for enzyme preparation and provides market for rural entrepreneurs. Enzyme is a complex solution produced by fermentation of fresh kitchen waste, sugar and water. The microbes in the enzymes helps purifying underground water, clean Rivers & Sea, Acts as a natural Pesticide & Organic Manure, Anti-Bacterial & Virus, Dispose of Kitchen Waste by Converting into Enzyme, Ecozyme Cleans polluted water in drains.
